TARONI PRESENTS ‘TARONI LABORATORIO’ AT MILAN DESIGN WEEK
Taroni’s inaugural project during Milan Design Week is a celebration of silk’s expansive role in contemporary art and design 7-10 April 2025

Milan, 27 March 2025 - Renowned Italian silk weaver Taroni is set to make its debut at Milan Design Week this April with ‘Taroni Laboratorio’, an immersive project dedicated to reimagining silk beyond fashion. With a strong focus on sustainability and circular design, Taroni Laboratorio transforms discarded silk into a resource, presenting a new collection of rugs, tapestries and pillows that breathe new life into Taroni’s heritage materials. This initiative marks the beginning of an ongoing mission to propose circular economy-driven designs, ensuring that Taroni’s exceptional silk finds new applications beyond the world of fashion.
Presented in a stunning private apartment in Piazza Castello, overlooking Milan’s Castello Sforzesco, the showcase unfolds across four bright rooms, offering a dynamic space for exploration and creativity.
At the heart of Taroni Laboratorio is a collection of handwoven rugs and tapestries designed by Milan-based artist Lillian Grant for Taroni in collaboration with manufacturer Casa Amar. These works merge Taroni’s legacy of fine Italian silk weaving with Morocco’s historic rug-making traditions. Crafted using the Amazigh knot technique, a centuries-old craft passed down through generations of Moroccan women, these rugs were woven on traditional wooden looms in Azilal, a province of central Morocco. Thousands of silk knots were meticulously hand-tied onto fine wool warps, sometimes incorporating wool fibres to create an interplay of materials that is both delicate and structured.
In an unprecedented approach, Taroni’s premium silk remnants were cut into ribbons and woven into these rugs using the Boucherouite technique, a tradition that originated in the 1950s as a resourceful response to material scarcity. Typically crafted using repurposed textiles, Boucherouite rugs are unique, one-of-a-kind expressions of the artisans’ creativity. By integrating Taroni’s silk into this heritage craft, the collection breathes new life into both the material and the tradition, reinforcing a commitment to sustainable and expressive craftsmanship. The artisans also played a key role in reinterpreting Lillian Grant’s designs, ensuring that each rug is not just a translation of her vision but a reflection of their own artistry.

Complementing the collection, Taroni Laboratorio also features a selection of vases designed by Milan-based American artist Lillian Grant in collaboration with her father, who is also an artist. She conceptualised and painted the pieces, while he built them in his studio in California. These cases exemplify a fusion of design and craftsmanship, blending Taroni’s luxurious silk with a sculptural and artistic sensibility to further extend silk’s influence beyond textiles. These pieces are finished with glazes inspired by Taroni’s signature striped silks, creating a striking connection between fabric and ceramics.
Additionally, Grant has created a collection of pillows that embodies a contemporary approach to silk’s potential in interior design. Drawing from Taroni’s extensive silk archive, her designs play with movement, texture and colour, transforming the company’s signature fabrics into bold, tactile compositions. The pillows, with their refined silhouettes and vibrant hues, serve as statement pieces that elevate any living space.
Beyond its presence at Milan Design Week, Taroni’s collaboration with Casa Amar will also be showcased at the prestigious Salone del Mobile fair within the SaloneSatellite exhibition (Pav. 5, Piazza dell’Artigianato), offering an additional platform to celebrate the dialogue between textiles, craftsmanship and contemporary design.
Taroni Laboratorio is an ongoing exploration of silk’s potential, not just as a textile, but as a material that inspires new forms and functions across disciplines. By pushing the boundaries of silk’s application in interior design, this project highlights the intersections of tradition and innovation, craftsmanship and contemporary aesthetics, offering a fresh perspective on one of Italy’s most storied materials.
